Had an issue with one of the newer Gentoo installs and font rendering in Java apps. Specifically, the font in JEdit was doubly spaced and the fonts in SQuirreL were were cut-off by the surrounding components (had a half-rendered appearance). Solution was to install the fonts packages (which, on that machine, wasn't yet completed). Following how-to is a good resource for resolving the issue:
